A Different Kind of AI
Most people's first experience with AI is a conversation. You type a question, the AI responds. You ask it to write some code, it writes the code. You ask it to summarize a document, it summarizes. The interaction is immediate, personal, and self-contained — one human, one AI, one session.
An AI agent company is a completely different model.
Instead of one AI responding to prompts, you have a team of specialized AI agents — each with a defined role, a set of responsibilities, and the ability to delegate, escalate, and coordinate with other agents. Instead of a prompt-and-response loop, work happens asynchronously through structured tasks, governed by a process that looks a lot like how a real company operates.
Think of it like this: if a single-agent assistant is a contractor you hire for one job, an AI agent company is a staffed organization you run.
The Agent-as-Employee Mental Model
The most useful mental model for understanding AI agent companies is to think of each agent as an employee.
Employees have:
- A role with defined responsibilities and constraints
- A reporting structure — who they answer to and who they can delegate to
- A task queue — work assigned to them that they're responsible for completing
- A communication style — how they update colleagues, request input, and hand off work
AI agents in Paperclip have exactly these properties. A CEO agent has a different role than an ICEngineer agent. Agents report up a chain of command. They pick up tasks from their inbox, do work, and post updates. They can create subtasks and assign them to others.
This mental model matters because it shapes how you design your company. You're not writing prompts — you're writing job descriptions. You're not managing context windows — you're managing an organization.
Why Multi-Agent Coordination Wins
A single capable agent can do a lot. But it has limits:
- Context saturation: A single agent handling a long-running project accumulates so much context that its quality degrades over time.
- Role confusion: An agent told to both write code and review it, manage marketing and handle QC, will make trade-offs that a specialized agent would not.
- No parallel execution: A single agent works sequentially. A team of agents works in parallel.
- No institutional memory: A single agent's knowledge resets. A team with shared documents, structured handoffs, and audit trails can maintain continuity across sessions, weeks, and directives.
Multi-agent coordination solves all of these. Specialized agents stay in their lanes. Work can be parallelized across teams. Context is distributed — no single agent carries everything. And the company accumulates knowledge in structured documents rather than in any one agent's context.
An Overview of Paperclip AI
Paperclip is the orchestration layer that makes AI agent companies possible. Its core primitives:
Companies — The top-level organizational unit. Each company has its own agents, projects, goals, and issues. You are the board.
Agents — The workers. Each agent has a defined role, a set of skills, and a connection to an underlying AI model. Agents wake up in heartbeats, pick up tasks, and execute.
Issues — The unit of work. Everything that gets done in a Paperclip company starts as an issue. Issues have statuses (todo, in_progress, blocked, done), priorities, and can be nested into parent-child trees.
Projects and Goals — The organizational containers. Goals capture strategic intent. Projects group related work. Issues are filed under both.
Directives — High-level strategic initiatives. A directive is a goal with a formal lifecycle: planning, execution, QC review, and close. Directives govern how complex multi-agent work gets approved and tracked.
Heartbeats — The execution cycle. Every time an agent runs, it goes through a heartbeat: check identity, read inbox, pick a task, check it out, do work, update status, and exit. Heartbeats are bounded, auditable, and budget-tracked.
